Creativity is similar to an emotional state; it’s very easy to tap into. It comes in and takes over your consciousness and every fiber of your being. Similar to the state of fear or anger, it happens fast and direct, except you’re filled with curiosity, wonderment, and a sense of excitement; the joy of possibilities. Hopefully you have a sketchbook nearby to capture your thoughts.

Your ideas are like great wine; they don’t go bad they just get better with age. I’ve been surprised to look back at sketches from 20 years ago and say to myself, “Wow, that’s pretty good! I should still make that piece”.

“The life of an artist is similar to being in the business of creating prototypes, where each piece is an experiment and exploration of creativity and process, to finally come up with a finished object or idea”. The excitement and bane of the creative process is that you’re never done. It’s always exciting, but there’s always another piece to be made. Finding a sense of completion and contentment is very elusive. One kernel of truth that I’ve learned throughout the years is just to show up to the studio every day; it doesn’t matter how I physically or mentally spent I might feel, I can still create powerful and emotive work.
There are days where inspiration comes through as a surge of high voltage, and you need to put the filters on. It’s all so unpredictable, just like life.
