Artists are often described as “flighty”, “unfocused”, “unreliable”, and maybe even “delusional”.  And from the outside, an artist’s life might look that way.  Yes, unlike most sane people, we have indeed pursued an uncertain path to chase a creative vision that often requires a back-up source of income.  And yes, today might be the day .....

And yes, today might be the day Habatat Galleries will place three pieces into the Imagine Museum, or today is the day an entire months worth of work is destroyed in the kiln.  Today might be both days.  Maybe today is the day, make that week, that I’ll have to drive across the country to pick up work because a gallery won’t ship it back.  And during that week of feeling like the lowest rung on the art ladder, I learn that I’ve been awarded a prestigious grant.  It’s enough to make anyone look schizophrenic.

I often speak to artists early in their careers about what is means to live an artist’s life.  I tell them to prepare to do EVERYTHING.  Not only will they conceive and create the work, The work must then be photographed, marketed, packed, and shipped.  It then has to be inventoried, retrieved, packed and shipped again.  The studio has to be maintained, websites updated, and supplies purchased whether you’ve sold work or not.  Good thing you have that second job.

The point is, to get to is this level in the game–exhibiting at Habatat Galleries International Invitational–you can’t be “flighty”.  Artists lives are shaped not only by creative vision, but by risk taking and an unflappable confidence that our decisions have value.  And okay, I’ll admit, an unrealistic level of perseverance that is almost delusional.  But the unlikelihood of success makes victory all the sweeter:  To have beaten the odds through sheer will of force and creative originality.
